Naming tips
  • Use lowercase, GA4 treats “Facebook” and “facebook” as different sources.
  • Use underscores instead of spaces.
  • Keep a shared sheet of names so your team stays consistent.
  • Never add UTMs to internal links on your own website.
In short

UTM parameters are tags added to a URL, such as utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, that tell Google Analytics where a visitor came from. Using consistent UTMs on ads, social posts, emails and WhatsApp messages lets you measure which campaigns actually drive traffic and conversions.

How to use this tool

  1. 1Enter your landing pageThe page people should land on.
  2. 2Add source, medium & campaignUse a preset or type your own lowercase values.
  3. 3Copy and usePaste the tracked link into your ad, post, email or message.
Which UTM parameters are required?

Technically only the URL, but you should always add utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign for clean GA4 reports.

Do UTM links affect SEO?

No, as long as you only use them on external campaigns. Never add UTMs to internal links on your own site, as that resets session data.

Do Google Ads need UTM tags?

If Google Ads is linked to GA4 with auto-tagging, you don’t need UTMs on Google Ads. Use them for Meta, LinkedIn, email and other platforms.

Where do I see UTM data in GA4?

In Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, change the dimension to Session source / medium or Session campaign.
